9/4/2023 0 Comments Tummy tuck recovery periodThis would include a check 1 week after discharge from hospital then between 3-4 weeks depending on your recovery. You will be followed up closely in my practice to ensure optimal outcomes. I would encourage women who have had a muscle repair performed to see a physiotherapist to help them engage their core appropriately now that it has been reconstructed. Exercise will be possible from 6 weeks with a gradual introduction. For many returning to light work may be possible from 2-3 weeks. By 2 weeks you will be able to stand up straight, and do small walks. You will be required to rest and should plan for this by making sure you have help with your children if you have them when you do go home. I think of it as the physical beginning of the journey to the new version of yourself. In hospital you will have help with things like showering. For the first 1-2 weeks you will not be able to stand up straight but will be able to walk a little. It is important that you do mobilise to facilitate your recovery but this is challenging. In this period of time you will be managed with stronger analgesia. The reality is that you will have reasonable discomfort for the first 48 hours which does improve. Keep in close communication with your surgeon and do not hesitate to communicate questions/concerns and the emotional swings that you may experience. Expect less of yourself do not go back to work too early and let others take care of you (for a change). Be prepared to distract your mind with things of interest such as books, magazines, and movies. While theres no one answer to this question, the average recovery time for a tummy tuck is two to four weeks. Be patient with the healing process, understanding that it will take several weeks to months to feel “normal” again. Make sure you have a strong support system in place who have time/patience to take care of you. Suggestions I have for patients undergoing this procedure: 1. I think it is helpful to be aware that these emotional swings do occur postoperatively. These emotions may range from depression ( “why did I do this to myself”) to elation (which may lead to over activity). It is not uncommon for patients who undergo the procedure to experience severe “mood swings”. Patients who are about to undergo tummy tuck surgery spend a lot of time thinking about the physical preparation for the procedure (for example weight loss issues) but do not spend a lot of time thinking about the emotional aspects. I do have another word of advice for you. Recovery time varies greatly among individuals. Descriptions of recovery times shorter than this, in my opinion, is over-promising. Recovery typically takes 2-3 weeks Can typically go back to light work in 2-3 weeks Can resume exercising in 6-8 weeks Some swelling can last several months Recovery time for tummy tuck averages from two to three weeks. I think it is best to prepare for a “recovery” of 4 weeks after tummy tuck surgery.
